Telehealth App
The Problem
In 2013 I had chronic migraines that had persisted for the better part of my life. Unfortunately, the only way to deal with the pain was with opioids, and I had become dependent. A friend suggested I try cannabis, which I did. Within 3 months, with a high CBD/low THC tincture, I was off opioids. Within 6 months I no longer had headaches.
My medication of last resort should have been my medication of first resort. This left me thinking there must be millions of people out there just like me who either did not know about medical marijuana or had so much stigma and prejudice, it was not an option.
I decided to launch HelloMD in California – the first Telehealth and educational platform in the cannabis space.
The Goal
The goal of HelloMD is to provide high quality medical care and advice for medical marijuana patients. Patients who come to HelloMD have a private and efficient appointment with a doctor or nurse and if they qualify, will receive a medical marijuana card for their particular state.
The Process
As we were the first online Telehealth app for medical marijuana recommendation, we needed to look to other Telehealth EMRs. The two most successful at the time were TeleDoc and Doctors on Demand.
We also looked at how we might improve the in-person doctor experience when seeking a medical marijuana card, which at the time was very low budget and a little sketchy. We mapped the user journey and created user personas to design to.
The other important factor was understanding state laws and regulations when it came to interacting with medical marijuana patients.
We launched our first Telehealth app in early 2014 in California and soon after had seen over one hundred thousand patients. We consistently performed user testing over the years and iterated in order to improve the user experience. A large part of our success has been the ease with which patients can see the doctor and exceptional integration with our customer service team.
